What is NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India)?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is an umbrella organization responsible for operating and managing retail payment and settlement systems in India. It was established to create a safe, secure, efficient, and accessible payment infrastructure that supports both traditional and digital payment systems across the country.

NPCI was incorporated in December 2008 under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. It was set up as an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). The Certificate of Commencement of Business was issued in April 2009.

NPCI acts as the central organization that develops, operates, and manages various retail payment systems, enabling smooth electronic fund transfers between banks, businesses, government institutions, and customers. It has played a major role in strengthening India’s digital payment ecosystem and promoting secure and efficient cashless transactions.
